C.S. Lewis shows all ideas of "new" or "scientific" or "modern" moralities are mere confusions of thought. Explanatory notes below: This abridged version of this essay contains the essence of Lewis’ arguments in his fascinating short book ‘The Abolition of Man/Humanity’. ‘The Abolition of Man’, a series of three lectures that were published, has been rated as one of the top ten non-fiction books of the 20th century, & is only a booklet really. (It is three chapters long or a two-hour read but some parts are academic). 0:01, 1:03 Psychoanalysis was introduced to the United States for the first time in 1909 when Sigmund Freud, accompanied by Carl Jung, travelled to the United States to deliver a famous lecture at Clark University. As Freud arrived by ship, he glimpsed the Statue of Liberty & said to Jung, ‘They don’t realise [in psychoanalysis] we’re bringing them the plague’ (plagues were in those days carried by cruise ships via infected passengers). One of the bad results of psychology was the promotion of Freud's own atheist, philosophic belief of moral subjectivism or "bad thinking"/"philosophical error" - the false belief that morality & conscience are only psychological (not sin related), to be altered at will. More on this here - Morality & Psychoanalsis: • Morality and Psychoanalysis by C.S. Lewis ... 0:43 Lewis here discusses the effects Freud's bad philosophy had with its increased receptivity to Communism & Nazism. I have shown the undermining subjectivism does with a coal miner creating a rabbit warren of weakened earth, unseen below the surface. As Freud disclosed in a confidential letter: “I regard myself as one of the most dangerous enemies of religion, but they don’t seem to have any suspicion of that” (1926). Freud unabashedly acknowledges the antinomian [anti-normative] roots of his doctrine: "Psychoanalysis is calculated to undermine religion, authority & morals". 0:46 Power Philosophies overseas: Marx was the philosophic father of Communinism, Nietzsche, broadly, for Nazisim. 1:18 One of the other terrible results of psychology was the overfocusing of humans on themself & their own minds, putting them in a 'room of mirrors' of self-analysis, causing extreme selfishness & its aftereffect, insanity. It was thought in 1909 that therapy could be the cure-all for mental stresses & problems. Today, psychiatry drugs have replaced the couch as a treatment for most of the old mental stresses. Eg., the results of continued child neglect cannot be solved with the stay-at-home mother, but with numbing "attention deficit" drugs & costly daycare with wisdomless teens! The children of absent, distracted & tired mothers are also common targets for sexual abuse. 6:40 See another essay by Lewis on this secular attempt to try & use instinct here - On Ethics: • On Ethics by C.S. Lewis Doodle 8:17 Making one aspect of the traditional moral code into a false god, & worshipping it as the key to everything or the most important moral at the expense of all the rest. 9.04 "The union & fellowship of men will be best preserved if each receives from us the more kindness in proportion as he is more closely connected with us." (Roman. Cicero. De Off. 1. xvi). "...if any provide not for his own, & especially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith, & is worse than an unbeliever" (1 Timothy 5.8). "If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?" (1 Tim. 3:5). 9:05 Ceteris Parabus - "all other things being equal" or "all other things held constant" or "provided all other variables stay the same". For instance, normally one's family comes before your fellow citizens, but in times of national danger, a man may have to temporarily put his country or nation (the safety of the population including his family) before his own family & before his own life even. God also can trump this natural moral for His sake: see Luke 14.26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers & sisters - yes, even his own life - such a person can not be my disciple" and Psalm 45.10 ("Listen, O daughter, ...forget your people, & forget your father's house..."). 8:03 The moral law is written on all our hearts: "Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law [of God], do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them..." (Romans 2.14-15). 12:50 Lewis warns that “if any one age really attains, by eugenics & scientific education, the power to make its descendants what it pleases, all men who live after it are the patients of that power.” (The Abolition of Man). Far from being freer and better humans, these new creatures will be weaker, not stronger.
