It is a quite old airline, founded in 1919 and fairly large with 19.000 employees and 176 currently active planes. Interestingly, another 143 were on order at the beginning of 2020. After having survived a Chapter 11 (debt protection administration) season in 2004, the airline merged with TACA in 2010 and joined Star Alliance in 2012 adding the South American landscape to the alliance's coverage. El Dorado Airport El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is the main hub for Colombian and international airlines in the region, most dominantly Avianca, LATAM and Copa. The current infrastructure began construction in 1955 and has benefited greatly from the growth of Avianca and later smaller regional low-cost carriers, boosting its growth and position in the region. The over 30 million passengers yearly proof this significance regularly. The main portion of these passengers travel to Lima in Peru, Madrid in Spain and Mexico City in Mexico.
