Metrograph presents Amos Poe and No Wave Cinema, featuring select highlights from Poe’s work behind and in front of the camera from the ’70s to 2020, beginning January 3 at Metrograph In Theater. Amos Poe was arguably the first punk filmmaker, the first director to consciously apply the same passion-over-polish, DIY ethos that had shaped the three-chord punk revolution to shooting zero-budget pictures on the fly, and when a loosely defined guerrilla art movement called No Wave Cinema coalesced in the gutted Lower East Side of the late 1970s and ’80s, Poe would immediately be identified as one of its leading lights. A showcase for New York City fixture Poe’s electric, grungily glamorous cinematic collaborations with a who’s who of downtown icons, including Richard Hell, Debbie Harry, and Cookie Mueller, in films that offer glimpses of a vanished NYC of Max’s Kansas City and the Mudd Club, of cheap rents, crumbling brick, fatalistic attitudes cribbed from Nouvelle Vague films, gnawing urban anomie, and some of the hippest music ever recorded in the United States. Amos Poe and No Wave Cinema runs from January 3 to January 25, with select encore screenings to follow.
