We were honored to welcome author and scholar Dr. Jessica Gordon Nembhard back to the Kheprw Institute for an inspiring night of conversation celebrating the 10th Anniversary Edition of her crucial book, Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice! This special in-person event on July 31, 2025, hosted at the Alkhemy Community Wealth Building Center, brought our community together to discuss the challenges and immense opportunities of our current political, economic, and social moment. ✨ About the Conversation In 2023, the Kheprw Institute hosted a deep community book study of Collective Courage. That conversation series, held during the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic, underscored the vital role of collective action and cooperative living when major institutions fell short. We gained deep insight into the three historic waves of Black cooperative organizing—learning how our communities have long come together to navigate challenging circumstances. Now, as we return to this essential text in recognition of the current challenges we face, we look to Dr. Gordon Nembhard to help us chart a path forward. In this discussion, we work towards a collective understanding of what it means to be a part of the Fourth Wave of Black Cooperative Organizing in America. 📚 About the Book Collective Courage is a monumental work that meticulously documents the rich, yet often-overlooked, history of Black cooperative economics—from the pre-Civil War era to the present. Dr. Gordon Nembhard proves that cooperative organizing has always been a powerful, indigenous strategy for Black Americans seeking economic self-sufficiency, political power, and community control. 🔗 Resources & Links Learn more about the Kheprw Institute: http://story.kheprw.org Support the Alkhemy Community Wealth Building Center & Kheprw Institute: http://give.kheprw.org Purchase Collective Courage: https://www.psupress.org/books/titles...
