Join me for an easy day hike at Mount St Helens. It was cloudy most of the 43 mile drive from the Interstate 5 highway out to the National Volcanic Monument. As I entered the Monument and reached the first viewpoint, there was snow on the ground and the mountain was still half covered in clouds. Fortunately, by the time I reached the Hummocks trailhead parking, the clouds had lifted and there were clear views all around. I hiked out the Hummocks Trail to the Boundary Trail, turned left and at about 1.9 miles found a great spot to sit and enjoy the views. The trail is well marked and has just a bit of elevation gain. After the hike I stopped at nearby Coldwater Lake which was formed by the 1980 eruption- volcanic debris dammed Coldwater Creek. Hiked February 27, 2026 3.8 miles out and back Starting elevation 2,600', gains 450' (starting elevation 792 M, gain 137 M) Easy Mount St. Helens is known as Loowit by the Klickitat People and Lawetlat'la to the Cowlitz People. Importance to Native American Peoples https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_S... Native American lore contains numerous stories to explain the eruptions of Mount St. Helens and other Cascade volcanoes. The best known of these is the Bridge of the Gods story told by the Klickitat people. The mountain is also of sacred importance to the Cowlitz and Yakama tribes that also live in the area. They find the area above its tree line to be of exceptional spiritual significance, and the mountain (which they call "Lawetlat'la", roughly translated as "the smoker") features prominently in their creation story, and in some of their songs and rituals.[67] In recognition of its cultural significance, over 12,000 acres (4,900 ha) of the mountain (roughly bounded by the Loowit Trail) have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[68] Washington Trails Association, Hummocks Trail https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/h...
