A playthrough of JVC's 1992 action-platformer for the Sega CD, Wonder Dog. The planet of K-9 has been invaded by the Pitbullies. In a last-ditch attempt to save their planet, K-9 scientists injected a puppy with science goo, shot him into space, and hoped that he would one day return to save them all. The pod crash lands on Earth, and after a short-lived and entirely superfluous "tender moment" with a young boy (whose father promptly ditches the pooch at the side of the road), the pup dons a superhero costume. Thus, Wonder Dog™ is born. Wonder Dog must now make his way back to K-9, and his journey will see him battling his way across the galaxy in a series of nineteen stages full of star flinging, Euro-platforming action. Developed by Core Design, who had first tested the console game waters with Impossamole ( • Impossamole (TurboGrafx-16) Playthrough ) for the TurboGrafx-16 in 1991, Wonder Dog was designed to become the mascot for JVC's Wondermega console. The game was also among the first wave of third-party North American Sega CD releases, debuting a few weeks ahead of Christmas 1992. Wonder Dog builds on what was done on Impossamole, and it is a much better game overall. It has similarly semi-linear, collectathon-based level designs chock full of blind jumps, and it still feels like an Amiga game, but the controls are more responsive, the collision detection is more reliable, the graphics are brighter and cleaner, and everything feels more thematically coherent. The cutscenes are reasonably nice, even though most of them (including the ending) don't have any sound, and the tunes are good, providing you can tolerate the constant whine of white noise in the background. (I also like how they sampled and pitch-shifted Homer Simpson's "d'oh!" to play when certain enemies die. How weird is that?) It's not a superstar in the Sega CD line-up, but Wonder Dog is a reasonably fun platformer that's boosted by some nice production values. If you were hankering for a CD-based platformer before Sonic CD came around, this would've filled that gap well enough. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
