With our carpenter away for summer holidays and bureaucracy slowing down progress on our habitation license, we shift focus outdoors and find plenty of meaningful work and adventure to keep us busy. Drew installs a full sprinkler system around our shade structure, creating 360° coverage that cools us down, and adds an extra layer of fire protection. The system will eventually run off gravity-fed tanks on the hillside. Meanwhile, we soak in the joy of our harvest — piri piri peppers, onions, lettuce gone to seed, strawberries, and the local “ugly Monchique” tomatoes that taste like pure magic. We also make a big step toward energy independence with the installation of Renogy solar panels, designed to perform even in shade. Seeing them produce steady power, even with leaves and dirt, is a huge win for our off-grid dream. With construction on hold, we lean into Portugal’s slower summer rhythm. Alongside our friend Nic, from Algarve Addicts, we set out on an island-to-island adventure: paddling to Culatra, trekking across sand, hopping a ferry to Faro, and hiking to Vilamoura. Along the way, we dive into the region’s culture — from seashells and fishing traditions to hidden paddle-in beaches, local tipping etiquette, and even stories about seahorses being smuggled for use as aphrodisiacs.
