Penda of Mercia was the last Anglo-Saxon king to have lived his whole life as a pagan. He was also the most powerful king in the whole of Britain by the time of his death. And yet, neither he nor Mercia often get a whole lot of attention paid to them, instead overshadowed by other kings from other kingdoms, like Alfred of Wessex, Edwin of Northumbria, or Æthelbert of Kent.
