MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKRC) – A report to police that a woman was stuffed inside a barrel has led to a death investigation. Maj. Walter Reeve with the Middletown Police Department said an anonymous caller led police to a house on Yankee Road Tuesday afternoon. “There was a young lady in the house on Yankee Road and she was concerned about her safety because she knew that there was a body in a barrel in the backyard. She had been threatened that if you tell anybody, the same thing is going to happen to you,” said Reeve. Police investigated the unusual report. That’s when they ran into 35-year-old William Slaton and asked him about the barrel. “He became nervous and said he couldn't give permission because it was his mother’s house and she wasn't there,” said Reeve. Middletown Police said after officers confronted him, he went back inside the house and out the back door. Then, he threw the barrel over the fence. It landed in a neighbor’s yard. Police later found a 21-year-old woman from Preble County dead inside of it. Neighbor Lori Dennon said she watched the investigation go down. “I thought it was crazy. I texted my husband and told him. He's like, 'Oh my God,' and he's like, 'Oh my gosh. That's three or four doors down from us,'” said Dennon. Police think the body could have been there a couple of days. “I was just really kind of skittish, especially being down the street from somebody like that. I saw where someone actually pulled up his record on Facebook,” said Dennon. Slaton was on parole. He was brought into the Middletown Police station for questioning. “He admitted to putting the young lady in the barrel and some other things that will come out in court,” said Reeve. Investigators aren’t saying who the woman is or how she died. Slaton is charged with gross abuse of a corpse, faailure to report a crime or death and tampering with evidence. More charges could be filed after the autopsy is complete.
