Welcome to the interesting 59th St-Columbus Circle Station at the southwest corner of Central Park. Located just a mere block within NYC's controversial Congestion Zone along Broadway, the station originally opened as a local stop for NYC's first-ever subway line in 1904. This would later be known as the IRT West Side Line and later the 1, 2, & 3 Trains. From 1989-2005, the infamous 9 Train also served the station as local. Within the 1960's renovation extended the platforms from 6 cars to 10, and they provisioned the station to be converted to an Express station in the future. However, this would never come to be. Today, the 2 and 3 trains blow past the station, missing direct connections to the A-D Lines. The lower level, serving the A to D Lines was built in 1932 as part the first subways opened under the Independent Subway System. This brought the first official city-owned subway to the area as the IRT (1 Train) was at the time privately-owned and has it own thing going on. Before the merger of the IND, BMT and IRT Subway Systems in 1949, the stations were connected, allowing passengers to transfer between the two separate entities. Today it is treated as one whole complex and is built to allow passengers to easily transfer between the 1 and the lettered lines. Let's also address the Colonizer in the room. I have a personal beef with Columbus being someone of both Puerto Rican and Italian descent. Don't let my personal jabs at the man get in the way of the video. I tried to remain as professional as possible within the video, but I'm using the opportunity to make it known, I'm not a fan. This is coming from someone who was born in Bari and raised in Brooklyn. So, please save me the Hero to Italian argument. Take my jabs with a grain of salt. Check Out My: Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/nicholettecaseystrains (and support the channel!)
