Tonight, we feature Drylongso (1998), a powerful and rarely-seen independent film directed by Cauleen Smith. The title comes from an African American vernacular expression meaning ordinary or everyday, yet the film itself is anything but ordinary. Set in Oakland, California during the 1990s, Drylongso follows Pica Sullivan (played by Toby Smith), a young Black art student who copes with her own feelings of invisibility and vulnerability by photographing Black men she fears will not survive the violence of the streets. Through her camera lens, she creates a living archive, transforming art into activism and memory into resistance. The film is also deeply intersectional — highlighting the overlapping struggles of race, gender, violence, and gentrification.
