KEYFRAMES - How, When and Why to use Keyframes in Final Cut Pro. In this video, we’ll take a look at keyframing in Final Cut Pro. We’ll learn how, when, where and why to use keyframes in video editing. I will demonstrate in Final Cut Pro, but the same methods can be used in any other NLE such as Premiere Pro, DeVinci Resolve, etc.. What is a Keyframe? In video editing, a keyframe locks in the value of a video or audio effect parameter at a particular point in the project. When two keyframes with different values are set in Final Cut Pro, a transition from one value to another is calculated, resulting in a dynamic change to that parameter. The word keyframe comes from the traditional storyboarding, where only important (key) frames were drawn to sketch a character’s motion over time. After the important keyframes were determined, the action or a transition between them was implied. Keyframing in Final Cut Pro In Final Cut Pro, you set keyframes at specific points in a clip to change parameter values at those points. For example, if you want to fade in your clip, you would set two opacity keyframes at different points in your timeline. At the first keyframe, your value is set to zero, making your clip completely transparent. The opacity value at the second keyframe is set to one hunderd, making your clip completely visible. Final Cut Pro interpolates the values between 0 and 100, creating a smooth fade in from black to your clip. Three Ways to Set Keyframes in FCPX 1⃣ Viewer When keyframing one of the three transform parameters, including the transform, crop and distort tools, you can set a keyframe directly in the viewer. When you select one of the three transform tools, a keyframe button is displayed in the top left corner. Clicking the keyframe button will lock that parameters value at the playhead location. Any changes to that parameter at a different point in the timeline, will add another kayframe at that location. 2⃣ Video Animation Editor Keyframes can also be set in the Video Animation Editor. To bing up the Video Animation editor, control-click your clip in the timeline, and select Show Video Animation. Each of your effects in the Video Animation editor will have a separate area for adding keyframes. If an effect has more than one parameter that can be keyframed, it will appear in the Video Animation editor with a dropdown arrow beside it’s name. To set a keyframe in the Video Animation editor, Option-click (or press Option-K) at a point on the horizontal effect control where you want to add the keyframe. A keyframe will appear as a white diamond in your selected parameter. Double diamonds indicate that you added a keyframe for more than one parameter at that point. 3⃣ Video Inspector 🔹 To add keyframes in the video inspector, position the playhead in the timeline at the point where you want to add a keyframe, then click the Keyframe button (or press Option-K). After you add a keyframe, the Keyframe button turns yellow, indicating that the playhead is currently on this keyframe. 🔹 When you move the playhead in the timeline, arrows appear next to the Keyframe button to indicate which side of the playhead has keyframes. To go to the previous keyframe, click the left arrow. To go to the next keyframe, click the right arrow. 🔹 After you’ve added one keyframe in a selected parameter, you can add another automatically by moving the playhead in the timeline and then adjusting the effect parameter. You can add as many keyframes to a clip as needed. Check out the video above for more information on keyframing clips in Final Cut Pro.
