In the latest, Malian military helicopters landed unexpectedly at Barrick’s Loulo-Gounkoto mine and seized over a metric ton of gold, said the company. The gold is worth over 100 million dollars. Earlier, in January, the junta government seized three tons of gold from the site. The junta-led Mali government is now planning to sell this gold to finance the mine's operations. Barrick called the plans to restart operations or sell gold from the site "illegitimate and ill-advised". The rift between the two parties dates back to 2023 and is based on gaining greater control of the gold mine’s riches.
