OAK END TABLES (aka NIGHTSTANDS) Terrific Nightstands with a secret ** DETAILS ** HOW LONG TO MAKE: 4 weeks, from raw lumber to final coat of finish HARDEST PART(s): My first time using “soft close” drawer hardware. Also, the locking mechanism for the secret drawer took a bit of trial and error. MATERIALS: Red and White Oak (purposely mixed and matched) lumber, and Oak veneered plywood. Soft close drawer slides, black handle hardware, screws and nails, Watco Danish oil (2 coats) and Watco Polyurethane finish (3 coats – 7 coats on tops). Ball bearing from in-line skates, faux leather inside one drawer. ORIGINAL SOURCE: (1) The movie National Treasure and its sequels had scenes where Nicholas Cage was toying with mechanisms in the Resolute Desk that opened secret compartments. The Resolute Desk is used by the President of the United States in the Oval Office, and there is a twin desk in England. The desks were made from the timbers of the British Artic exploring ship, HMS Resolute. This got me interested in the whole “secret drawer idea,” and I searched online until I found three or four that I liked. (2) The online versions I looked at were great in principle, but not detailed in either plans or explanation, so I just manufactured the side tables to my own specifications.
