How were Lightsaber sounds made in the Star Wars films? Ben Burtt, the mastermind behind the sounds of the Star Wars films discovered that by swinging a particular type of microphone around a television set, the mic would pick up the transmission signal and make a crackling sound. He blended this with the humming sound of an old Simplex movie projector, which is powered by two motors that drift in and out of phase. Those two elements together give the ambient sound of a Lightsaber. Burtt then played this sound over speakers and recorded it with another mic. By swinging that new mic around while it was recording, it created a doppler effect, which is the whooshing sound of the Lightsaber as it’s swung around. The sound of two Lightsabers clashing is created by rubbing dry ice on metal, and by the sound of two carbon arc lamps firing up. No synths were involved, unlike lots of droid voices – see an earlier post about that – but it is an amazingly iconic and original piece of electronic sound design and I love the way Burtt was able to use random objects so creatively to give us a sound that is now globally recognised and evokes a story all of its own.
