Step into the ancient world of the Etruscans—an influential yet often overlooked civilization that shaped the cultural foundations of Italy long before the rise of Rome. In this engaging Antiquities Lecture, you’ll explore the Etruscans’ remarkable achievements in art and architecture, examine the enduring mystery of their non-Indo-European language, and discover how recent archaeological research continues to reshape our understanding of their legacy. Led by Dr. Richard Daniel De Puma, F. Wendell Miller Professor Emeritus of Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of Iowa, this lecture draws from decades of international excavation and curatorial experience. Dr. De Puma has conducted fieldwork in Turkey, Tunisia, India, and Italy, and served as co-director of excavations at Crustumerium, a Latin settlement just north of Rome. He was also the Lead Curatorial Consultant for the permanent Etruscan galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and editor of the accompanying catalog Etruscan Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His current project, The Etruscans: From the Heart of Ancient Italy, will open at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco in 2026. Whether you're passionate about ancient history, archaeology, or the roots of Roman civilization, this lecture offers fresh insight into a culture that deserves far more than a passing mention in history books.
