What are some things that may affect my eGFR results?

Trend is key essentially in my mind as a physician I think for all physicians and that's what I discuss with my patients as well because EGFR can vary depending on everyday life, depending on even hydration status. If it's a hot day and the body has more insensible, we call fluid loss through sweating. For example, you can have a drop in the EGFR if you get your labs check that day. It can vary with blood pressure control. So if the blood pressure is very high or low on that specific date when you get your labs checked, there can definitely be a variation. And so if I see there is a sudden change in EGFR for one of my patients that is different from kind of where their trend has been, I will definitely repeat their blood work in a week or two weeks. And again, trend is key. So essentially kind of following, maybe even plotting out a graph is helpful I find for patients because then you're not looking at the tiny blips, which might be up or down, but you're kind of looking at the overall trajectory of the eGFR.
