From piano lyricism and clarinet virtuosity to the haunting timbre of the Japanese hichiriki, Across Cultures explores transformation, memory, identity, and connection through music that bridges East and West. The program includes: Robert Voisey – Persistence of Melancholy Thomas Piercy – Meinai Sakebigoe (Invisible Scream) for hichiriki Hoàng Phó – Talk With The Raven (US Premiere) Emily Koh – sang de glacier Reena Esmail – Etude 1: Largo, weighted Miho Sasaki – a little peace in the alley looking at blue sky Michael Schelle – Akita Ekho Chen-Hui Jen – into the tree waves One Minute More! selections from Fifteen Minutes of Fame featuring works by Akari Komura and Douglas DaSilva John Cage – Ryoanji for three hichiriki and percussion (with audience participation as percussionists) Highlights include the U.S. premiere of Hoàng Phó’s Talk With The Raven, evocative piano works inspired by glacial landscapes and wooded solitude, and Cage’s meditative Ryoanji, inviting the audience to become part of the performance itself. Praised as “exceedingly interesting” and “kaleidoscopic,” pianist Eunmi Ko brings commanding artistry shaped by performances at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Clarinetist and hichiriki player Thomas Piercy, hailed by The New York Times as “Brilliant…playing with refinement and flair,” bridges traditions with panache and imagination.
