Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) for Varicose Veins I Sabah Plastic Surgeon Dr Charles Lee

#drcharlessabah #adzimsonographer #varicoseveins #sabahevla EndoVenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) of Great Saphenous Vein for Varicose Veins by Sabah EVLA Laser Team with Plastic Surgeon Dr Charles Lee and Vascular Sonographer Adzim Alwi and Staff Nurse Elmie. 6-8% of adults 50 years or older develop varicose veins as an age-related disease. Varicose veins usually appear as bulging, twisted bluish veins near the surface of the skin in the lower legs. The condition is most common among women as a result of repeated pregnancies but prolonged standing or family history of venous disease increase the risk for developing varicose veins. According to plastic surgeon Dr Charles Lee, “The development of varicose veins is often the first sign of venous disease. Public awareness and understanding of varicose veins is an important health concern worthy of medical diagnosis and treatment. It is important to educate the public and also engage health care professionals on the need to assess the health status of veins in order to avoid the consequences of chronic venous insufficiency including leg swelling, skin changes and skin ulceration. Advanced health risks include conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is an important health problem. This related health risk from chronic venous disease can result in death from blood clots that obstruct blood flow to the lungs (pulmonary embolism). Most of these health related problems resulting from chronic venous disease could be detected by simple, cost-effective screening using ultrasound image screening and also inspection of the lower legs. The condition occurs when valves that facilitate blood flow between the heart and the legs begin to leak and cause blood to pool in the legs. Common symptoms include leg swelling, muscle cramps, soreness, tiredness and aching in the legs, itchiness and eczema in the lower leg, skin discoloration and ulcers. Ultrasound imaging is used to map the vein blood flow and to guide the EVLA procedure. This technique, called EndoVenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) or EVLT, causes no pain as it is performed under local anesthesia with no bleeding and bruising and enables patients to return to normal activities as soon as possible. Physical activity such as walking, cycling and swimming are ways to improve circulation by preventing blood from pooling in the leg veins.
