Jordan spent nine years as a featured soloist with the Chick Webb Orchestra, trading trumpet duties with Bobby Stark and remaining with the band even after Ella Fitzgerald took over following Webb's death. From 1943 to 1947, he brought his Armstrong-inspired voice to the Duke Ellington Orchestra, where he shared vocal duties with Ray Nance.
