When Sarah and I make replica pots, we are striving to get them as close to the originals as we can manage, and to do this we try to use tools that are as authentic as possible. This means that the form of the tool and the materials from which it is made has to have been available to the ancient potters whose work we are replicating. The archaeological evidence for the design of the tool's working edge will usually come from the impressions that it left on the surface of the clay, while the structure of the tool will be based on similar tools in museum collections and from excavated assemblages. But the original implements would undoubtedly have served more than a single function in the pottery manufacturing process often being used to both form and decorate the vessels. Here I look at some of our replica tools and the ways that they may have been used.
