The novels work best if you treat them like any other book. I wrote them because my son isn't a reader, and I needed to expose him to lots of vocabulary all under one roof, so to speak. The story is contemporary, but the vocabulary is not and contains much of what you'd find in the most challenging of classic books. The idea is exposure in context with a child- friendly built-in dictionary on every page. The reference is there if needed. The words in the book are not a to-learn list but another tool in your box. In terms of learning vocabulary for the tests, I would make sure your child knows all the words you come across in your current VR workbooks, but I would aim to read my novels sequentially and twice before the tests.
