Is Figurative Painting dead? Surely this expression is kind of excessive, maybe on purpose. I think that the best way to phrase it is to say that figuration in painting has been on life support since the second half of the twentieth century. How did this happen and is there hope for the future of figuration ? The twentieth century was the age of excess in art, everything had to be extreme : extreme concept, extreme provocation, extreme innovation. Figurative painting was swept away and barely survived. If figurative painting has a destiny for the future of art, it will build up slowly but surely. We’ll see what happens in the next decades but I know that figurative painting has a role to play, artists just have to claim their due. What do you think ? Do you think that figurative painting will have a new Renaissance and become relevant again for the mainstream art world ? Do you think that it will stay a niche art form, reserved for a small number of enthusiast or do you think that it has the potential to become popular again, both for the elites and the general public ? I paint mainly imaginative realism. I’m mostly self-taught, I learned the techniques of the Academy of the Nineteenth century by myself and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. On YouTube, I do mostly drawing and oil painting techniques videos in the Atelier tradition, I share thoughts and explanations that can be useful to anyone, from beginners to more advanced artists interested in picking up realism and classical figuration. 🛒 Visit my shop : https://atelierfigurativearts.com/ *** Materials list: ✍️ Drawing ✓ Kneaded eraser ✓ Small mirror ✓ Graphite Pencils 2H, HB and 2B ✓ Charcoal: Nitram charcoals (H, HB and B) 🎨 Palette ✓ Titanium White PW6 ✓ Flake White (or substitute) PW1 ✓ Cadmium Yellow light (or "lemon") PY35 ✓ Yellow Ochre PY42 ✓ Raw Umber PBr7 ✓ Transparent Red Oxyde PR101 ✓ Burnt Umber PBr7 ✓ Venetian Red PR101 ✓ Pyrrole Red PR255 ✓ Quinacridone Rose PV19 ✓ Ultramarine Blue PB29 ✓ Ivory Black PBk9 ✓ Cobalt Teal Blue (turquoise light) PG50 ✓ Phthalo Turquoise PB15 + PG7 ✓ Phthalo green yellow shade PG36 🖌️ Brushes ✓ Filbert hog bristle and Synthetic sizes n° 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 ✓ Flat Synthetic brushes (same size) ✓ Round sable brush or round Kolinsky sable n° 4, 8, 10, 12 (from the size of the nail (about one inch) or synthetic imitation Medium ✓ Linseed stand oil ✓ Odorless mineral spirits ✓ Or Alkyd medium (Liquin, Galkyd, Flow'n'Dry etc.) ✓ Safflower oil Surface ✓ Linen canvas, fine grain universal coating ✓ For studies : Canson oil-acrylic oil paper Figueras ✓ Gesso and MDF panels are also great for studies #art #painting #inspiration
