But the Rio Tomo hasn’t always been known as a fisherman’s paradise. For decades, this region of Colombia was considered extremely dangerous due to guerrilla conflict and limited access to the remote savannah and jungle surrounding the river. Very few outsiders ever made it into this part of the country. Today, the story of the Rio Tomo is changing. As peace has returned to much of the region, anglers are finally getting the chance to explore these untouched waters — and the fishing is nothing short of incredible. The Rio Tomo River flows through Colombia’s vast Llanos region, a massive floodplain ecosystem where seasonal rains create endless lagoons, channels, and structure. This environment is perfect habitat for giant peacock bass, allowing them to grow big and aggressive with very little fishing pressure. These fish are apex predators. They crush topwater lures, explode on baitfish, and fight harder than almost any freshwater fish in the world. In this episode, I travel deep into Colombia to fish the legendary Rio Tomo in search of monster peacock bass.
