DENJIRO: Today, I’ll show you an interesting experiment using light. I have here two kinds of liquid. In one glass is regular water, and in the other is water with sugar. Can you tell which one is the sugar water? BOY: I can’t! DENJIRO: They both look exactly the same. But if you use a certain tool, you can tell the difference. Here it is. If you look at the liquids through these sunglasses... BOY: One of the liquids is colored! DENJIRO: The liquid that has a color to it is the sugar water. What I used was a pair of polarized sunglasses. They can reduce the light reflected from water or snow. With regular water and sugar water, the way light passes through is different. You can’t tell the difference with the naked eye, but with polarized sunglasses, you can tell them apart due to the color difference that arises from the way light passes through. If you use a polarizer, you can see strange patterns even with something transparent. Let me put this plastic box inside. GIRL: It looks like a rainbow! It’s so pretty! NARRATOR: Now, let’s see this plastic spoon with a polarizer. As you can see, a pattern appears. DENJIRO: What if I apply force to this soft piece of plastic? The pattern changes. This is called “photoelasticity.” Applying force from the outside makes the pattern change. By doing so, you can see the internal force and distortion of a transparent object. NARRATOR: Photoelasticity was first discovered by British physicist David Brewster in 1816. It is used to detect the elasticity and durability of items like plastic. DENJIRO: I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!"
