It results in a bulge or protrusion in the abdominal area, specifically around the umbilical region. Umbilical hernias are relatively common, especially in infants and young children. They can also occur in adults, particularly among individuals who are overweight, have had multiple pregnancies, or have a history of previous abdominal surgery. Some common symptoms of an umbilical hernia include: A soft bulge or swelling near the navel that may become more noticeable when standing, coughing, or straining. Discomfort or pain at the site of the hernia, which may worsen with physical activity or lifting heavy objects. Nausea or vomiting, especially if the hernia becomes trapped or incarcerated, leading to a potentially serious condition called strangulation. In infants, umbilical hernias often resolve on their own as the abdominal muscles strengthen. However, if the hernia persists beyond the age of 4 to 5 years or causes significant discomfort, medical intervention may be necessary. In adults, umbilical hernias are unlikely to resolve on their own and may require treatment. The most common form of treatment is surgery, where the protruding tissue is pushed back into place, and the weakened area is repaired. This procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis and has a high success rate. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional if you suspect you have an umbilical hernia. They can provide an accurate diagnosis, evaluate the severity of the hernia, and recommend appropriate treatment options based on your specific situation.
