https://www.edwardandezra.com/ The Biblical story of Nebuchadnezzar is from the book of Daniel and tells of a king who is cast down by God for his pride. The once powerful ruler is debased to a snarling beast. William Blake’s work depicts the naked terror of Nebuchadnezzar, crawling on all fours as a half-man, half-animal, monstrosity. But along with this Blake depicts a detailed anatomy from the subject. This style from Blake was not unique to just this painting, but is unique to the artist. It works well for the story of Nebuchadnezzar, as misery in physical form is agony, and therefore the muscular detail expresses this. Besides just the facial expression, the pose, and the detailed anatomy of Nebuchadnezzar, we see in the direct background an arch or hut. When looking at other versions of Blake’s Nebuchadnezzar, we notice this arch is the hollow of a stump, the stump from the hewed down tree Nebuchadnezzar prophetically dreamt of before these events.
