What model has some serious drip? A hydrologic model of course! Kate dives deep into The Scott Valley Integrated Hydrologic Model (SVIHM): a computer model that can simulate different water management strategies before time and money are spent carrying them out in reality. Created by Dr. Thomas Harter and his team at the University of California, Davis, SVIHM combines decades of data on rainfall, snowpack, streamflow, irrigation practices, and groundwater levels with geologic information and physics-based equations to simulate how water flows through Scott Valley. The team then experiments with different water management scenarios, like replenishing the aquifer using a method called managed aquifer recharge (MAR).
