Join us for the next installment of FPAN's "Zoom into Archaeology" series: "The Maroon Marines: Archaeology at Prospect Bluff" by FPAN Destination Archaeology Resource Center Manager Mike Thomin! During the War of 1812, a fort was built by Black British Colonial Marines and Indigenous people along the Apalachicola River. Called βNegro Fortβ by American officials, it eventually became the center of the largest free Black settlement in what is now the United States. This talk highlights the history of this settlement and several artifacts recovered from the site that you can now view as 3D models online. Mike Thomin is the manager of the Florida Public Archaeology Networkβs Destination Archaeology Resource Center and a Faculty Research Associate at the University of West Florida. Mike has a M.A. in history/public history and has spent over a decade working as a museum professional in public archaeology. He is a Certified Guide with the National Association for Interpretation, and has worked on a variety of heritage interpretative and heritage tourism projects across the state with local, state, federal, and international agencies. Most recently he is working on a multidisciplinary and collaborative project to designate the Florida Panhandle into a National Heritage Area. He also currently serves on the board of St. Michaelβs Cemetery Foundation Inc. as President and he is the co-founder of Northwest Florida Maritime Landscape Alliance for Preservation. He formerly served as president of the Trail of Florida Indian Heritage. Mike has a passion for maritime history and is a certified computer nitrox/scientific diver. His research interests include public history, maritime history, maritime archaeology, public archaeology, museum studies, and heritage interpretation. His published articles have appeared in Legacy, Interdisciplinary Journal of Maritime Studies, The Museum Review, and the Journal of the American Revolution. He has a chapter he co-wrote in the next Archaeology of Piracy book scheduled for release in 2023. This presentation is most appropriate for teens and adults, but is family-friendly.
