Nikolai Korndorf - Yarilo

Korndorf's Yarilo dates from 1981, and is scored for solo prepared piano with electronic amplification. It is the musical telling of the primitive Slavic pagan fertility rite. The work is constructed of small recurrent musical elements, on which the composer steadily builds, unfolding them, layering one repetitive pattern upon another, thickening textures , and increasing complexity, volume and dissonance. The climax is like the very thunder of a sudden Russian Spring. It is its propitiation and release in every physical sense. And with spring comes light and life. Yarilo is that light, the embodiment of the melting ice and the rebirth of life, emerging from the darkness and death of winter. Piano soloist Anna Levy Recording date 2003
