The sounds of Agile Gibbons calling in Malaysia's tropical rainforest. The song of the Agile Gibbon (Hylobates agilis) [also known as the Black-handed Gibbon] is a disappearing sound of the rainforest in Malaysia, Sumatra and the far south of Thailand. This species has a patchy distribution and is generally much less common than the more widespread White-handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar) with which it overlaps in range. Agile Gibbons are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List due to destruction of their lowland rainforest habitat and also the pet trade. In this video sample Agile Gibbons can be heard singing in the forests of Ulu Muda, Malaysia. Although the sounds of Agile Gibbon are quite similar to that of White-handed Gibbon, there are particular elements of its vocal repertoire which are diagnostic. For example, the phrases of low-high bi-phasic notes (the low notes are made while exhaling, the high notes while inhaling) are typical of this species. These particular sounds are often heard immediately after the great call of the female.
