李대통령 "남부내륙철도, 수도권 일극체제 벗어나는 국토 대전환 시작" President Lee Jae Myung attended the groundbreaking ceremony of a long-awaited railway project that will dramatically cut travel time between Seoul and South Korea's southern regions. The project is part of his push for balanced regional growth, which he has called essential to the country's economic survival. Our Blue House correspondent Song Yoo-jin reports. A journey that now takes nearly five hours by car will soon be cut to under three. That's how travel time between Seoul and Geoje, a city on South Korea's southern coast, is expected to change. Ground was broken on the long-delayed Southern Inland Railway project on Friday. President Lee Jae Myung called it far more than just another rail line. "This marks the beginning of a major national transformation: moving away from a capital-centered system and instead connecting people, regions, and opportunities to create new engines of regional growth." First proposed in 1966, construction of the railway stalled for six decades due to concerns about economic feasibility. Scheduled to open in 2031, the 7-point-1-trillion won project, worth roughly 4-point-8-billion U.S. dollars, will link Gimcheon in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province with Geoje in Gyeongsangnam-do. President Lee says the line will help unlock new growth opportunities. "Tourism along the southern coast will rise to a global level, reviving local businesses and creating countless jobs. New industrial zones along the railway will help turn cities across the region into places that attract young people back." Regional development outside the capital area is one of President Lee's top policy priorities this year. He reiterated that commitment during a town hall meeting with residents of Gyeongsangnam-do Province later in the day. "When conditions are equal, we will prioritize directing fiscal resources to regions outside the capital. We're also thinking of expanding infrastructure and industrial investment in those areas.” Among the ideas suggested was expanding government support to help the province's key industries: defense, aerospace, and shipbuilding, adopt artificial intelligence in manufacturing to boost competitiveness.
