I just got this piece in the mail today. This is one of IMRC older run locomotives but none the less is still a great piece. It is a CN (Canadian National) SD40-2W with factory installed ESU Loksound. I couldn't wait to run it so I laid a 3 foot section of track down to run it back and forth to listen to ESU's amazing sounds...I can say I was definetely NOT disappointed. A quick run down on the locomotive...I was tempted to do a review but didn't have time so here is a quick run down of it... IMRC did a great job replicating this model. There are a few issues that Rivet Counters could spot out but being that I am not a Rivet Counter (in this case anyways) I would say that IMRC did an excellent job with the details. The main issue I noticed is with the ditch lights. It appears that this is one area where IMRC either cheaped out or didn't care to perfect. The light of the ditch lights is not confined to the ditch light castings...the light spreads right across the front deck on the engine. To add to that, a very unfortunate part is that the lights do not flash when the horn is in use which is a major downside in my opinion and it would even be something I would get custom done in the future. That is my only major complaint about this piece; the rest of the locomotive is great. They did an absolutely amazing job of the start off procedure from a slow prototypical start to a slow prototypical stop. As for sound you cannot go wrong with ESU. The sounds are very prototypical to this model and they did a very good job with the horn and bell. The startup and shutdown sequence is by far one of the best parts in my opinion. The only function I would have liked defined more is the brake squeal during a hard brake. I occasionally hear a faint squeal but unless you are in near complete silence...good luck. The only other issue with the sound is the idling sound is overpowering to the other functions. When the engine is idling or running, the horn, bell, coupler hitch and air release are bleached out by the idle. I recommend turning idling down to get the full essence of the sound. The engine appears to be an okay puller. Compared to some of my other engines the pulling power on this piece is a little lower than my ES44's and SD40-2's by other companies as well as by IMRC. The engine to me is fairly heavy though many people have said they found it light. I guess it depends on the other engines you have. Compared to my Bowser it is light but compared to my Genesis it seems average weight. Overall I would rate this engine a 7.5/10. I would rate the sound individually at a 8.5/10 and the quality of the engine itself at a 7/10 mainly because of the ditch light issue. Anyways back to my layout... ...since filming this I have the rest of the track down. I'll post a short run by in the next couple days of it. Feel free to comment but remember to like and subscribe to stay up to date with my future videos.
