Pietro Vierchowod, born 6 April 1959 in Calcinate (Italy). 562 games and 38 goals in Serie A, playing as centre-back for 20 seasons (1980-2000), becoming the 7th highest appearance holder of all time in Serie A. He played with Como (1980-1981), Fiorentina (1981-1982), Roma (1982-1983), Sampdoria (1983-1995), Juventus (1995-1996), Milan (1996-1997) and Piacenza (1997-2000). He won 2 Serie A, 4 Coppa Italia, 1 Supercoppa Italiana, 1 UEFA Champions League, 1 European Cup Winners' Cup, also 1 Serie B and 1 Serie C1 with Como in his first professional years. Vierchowod amassed 45 caps and scored 2 goals for the Italian national football team (1981-1993), taking part to 3 FIFA World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990) and winning the first one. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Italian centre-backs of all-time, and one of the best of his generation, during his playing career he was nicknamed lo Zar ("the Tsar") because of his pace, defensive ability, physicality, tenacious playing style, and Ukrainian descent; he was the son of a Ukrainian Red Army soldier from Starobilsk.
