I wish I had a long romantic story about this song, but the truth is that I started writing it five years ago the night I'd decided to quit drinking. Mushrooms helped with my decision that night, which would be a shame not to mention. That detail isn't relative to the song, but it's a time stamp for me. I was at my buddy @swamp_savant studio and he'd been playing a song in this tuning that I hadn't messed with before, so we sat in there for like three hours and I came up with a few sections of the guitar part, recorded into voice memos like everything else, and forgot about it for a couple of years. I was on a flight to somewhere I can't recall right now with no wifi, which always means going through voice memos or the organized chaos of my notes folder. I opened the note titled "Olivia" and expected to find something substantial that I'd written, but it was literally a blank note titled "Olivia" lol Fast forward another couple of years and I'm on a flight to another place I can't recall, and, having written a couple of other sections of the song since I'd discovered it the first time, I felt the lyrics and they seemed to present themselves fluidly out of nowhere as they often do. Months later, while working on a steep and sketchy roof, the rest of the song came to me, and I stayed on that roof for way too long to talk into my voice memos folder so I wouldn't forget it. I got in my truck and wrote it all down, went home and played through it for probably eight hours. Anyway, there's more to it but thems the bones of what's behind this one. It's special to me because it encompasses a number of years of experiences and memories that flow through it. Sometimes it takes me years of picking up and putting down songs, and sometimes it takes me a day. Olivia feels brand new to me every time I play it.
