On that night, Downs arrived at a hospital in Springfield, Oregon with her three young children—Christie, Cheryl, and Danny—who had all been shot at close range. Cheryl, age 7, was pronounced dead; Christie and Danny survived but suffered life-altering injuries. Downs herself had a superficial gunshot wound to the arm. Downs claimed that a “bushy-haired stranger” attempted to carjack her on a rural road and opened fire on her family. However, investigators quickly found severe inconsistencies in her story. Physical evidence, eyewitness statements, and the recovery of the weapon linked directly to Downs pointed toward a staged attack. Christie Downs later testified that her mother was the shooter. Prosecutors argued that Downs shot her children to remove perceived obstacles between herself and a man she was obsessed with—a former lover who made it clear he did not want children. In 1984, Downs was convicted of murder, attempted murder, and assault, receiving a life sentence plus 50 years. She later gained additional notoriety for her manipulative behavior, her media interviews, and her continued insistence on innocence. Downs has repeatedly sought parole, maintaining her original narrative and denying responsibility for the shooting. Her hearings have become a subject of significant public interest due to her shifting explanations, lack of remorse, and the psychological profile that emerged during the investigation and trial. Her surviving children were eventually adopted by the lead prosecutor in the case.
