Groundwork is fine. It's interesting. It's developmental. But who knew it could help horses learn to regulate their emotions and learn to go from reacting to thinking? Well, I began to realized it on another level after being in treatment for CPTSD. When my emotional systems would implode/explode/meltdown/whatever and I could no longer interact with my therapist, she would ask me a question I knew the answer to. An easy question. But enough that I had to take a moment to THINK! Recall. A name. A color. A simple fact It is nearly impossible for the prefontal cortex to be problem solving, recalling information, answering questions if the amygdala as hijacked the situation and is screaming, "The end is near! Flee for your lives!" It's somewhat a case of one or the other. So I experienced in treatment and began to understand with horses. Gently come back to the question. Quietly guide the mind toward thinking and problem solving. It doesn't have to be tricky, it's better if it's not. Just enough to guide the train back to safety, even if it is just moments in the beginning. You can always stretch one moment into two and so on.
