The upcoming session will feature two distinguished figures. Thierry de Montbrial, Chairman of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) and founder of the World Policy Conference, brings extensive experience in international relations, policy planning, and strategic research. Mr. Fatih Karahan started his career as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2012 and served as the Team Leader of Labor and Product Market Studies and also a monetary policy advisor at the Bank until 2022. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Columbia University and New York University. Then, Mr. Karahan became a senior economist at Amazon in 2022 and was appointed principal economist there in November 2022. Mr. Karahan, who had been acting as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye since 28 July 2023, was appointed Governor on 3 February 2024. This session will discuss the monetary policy and inflation outlook in Türkiye with a particular focus on the ongoing moderation in demand and improving expectations. In June 2023, the CBRT started a monetary tightening cycle and increased the policy rate from 8.5% to 50% in less than a year. To strengthen the monetary transmission, the policy rate hikes were supported by a number of macroprudential measures. As a result, credit growth lost momentum; domestic demand started to moderate, and pricing behavior started to improve. Meanwhile, international reserves showed a noticeable improvement on the back of rising attractiveness of TL assets and strong capital inflows. The discussions will also concentrate on the recent inflation dynamics and the strong decline in inflation. After reaching its peak in May 2024, the disinflation process started in June on the back of strong base effects and a discernible decline in the underlying trend of monthly inflation. It is anticipated that the discussions will focus on the mechanisms that will lead to disinflation as well as the prospects for economic growth in the future. The discussions will also touch on possible risks, both locally and globally, as well as the challenges during the process. #türkiye #turkey #interestrates Copyright ⓒ Maeil Business Newspaper.
