This branch line is still signalled with the traditional 'electric token block' regulations from Midge Hall Signal Box, and then via a token-less 'One Train Working' system towards Ormskirk. The line is hourly-served by a Northern diesel multiple unit, and Rufford Station is one of three intermediate stations on the line. All four LED wigwags / road traffic lights have full sets of long shades, and level crossing operation is done from the small signaller's cabin found on the Preston-bound platform.
