An OL'55 double within one post, marking the official end of the Australian summer with the clocks moving back and Autumn is now in full season. I decided to merge two of the Aussie band's hits as they were successive releases, the former in the final weeks of 1977, and the latter in the Autumn of 1978. Beginning their chart run in the mid 70's, OL'55 were mainstays for the rest of the decade with their retro rock and sometimes kitschy throwbacks to another era. They were hugely popular with their often visual garish displays and wonderful sense of the fun side of pop music. Issuing about a dozen singles, half of which made the Top 40, the band reached its zenith when it scored back to back Top 10's with 'Looking for an echo' and 'Rockin Xmas' in late 1976/early 1977. 'Stay while the night is young' was a Top 20 success in January of 1978, and the next single 'Feels like a summer's night', despite considerable airplay could only make #50 when issued in April. As with many of their hits, the songs were included in the high profile Various Artists Compilations that were incredibly popular at the time. 'Stay' was featured on the RCA collectors item 'Ripsnorter' and 'Feels like a summer night' was on a K-Tel album 'Hot Trax' OL'55 disbanded in 1982 and the members went in a number of different directions - some to acting, some to light entertainment television, others formed new bands and musical projects. There were a lot of musical memories and joyous performances that this quirky group created and are wonderful pop postcards from the 1970's.
