As a staple in growing potted plants, it’s important you know what you’re working with. Perlite is a naturally occurring mineral in the form of amorphous volcanic glass, although it’s often confused by new gardeners as being some lightweight material like styrofoam. It’s occasionally called expanded pyrite and has the nickname “volcanic popcorn”, and I’ll get into why in the next segment.
