DIRE WOLVES Well, news of dire wolves coming back from extinction swept the globe yesterday, but now some experts are questioning just how true that is. More than 10,000 years ago, Dire Wolves vanished from planet Earth. But now, thanks to modern science, they're back! Some experts, like Corey, don't actually reckon these guys are the real deal. To make these cubs, a bioscience lab in the US, called Colossal Biosciences, you know, the folks trying to bring back the woolly mammoth and the Tasmanian tiger, extracted ancient DNA from Dire Wolf bones. Which they used to DNA to edit the genes of grey wolves, its closest living relative. And claim they've brought it back from extinction! But you see to truly de-extinct something, you would have to completely clone it, not just change the characteristics of an animal that already exists. While Colossal Biosciences is standing by its de-extinction claim because it says the pups look like dire wolves and have genes that are specific to dire wolves, some scientists say what makes a species is more than just skin deep. So for now, I guess we still can't fully say a species has returned from extinction. LEADER'S DEBATE Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition leader Peter Dutton went head-to-head in their first public debate of the election campaign last night. They each tackled questions on migration, education, energy policy and the cost of living asked by a group of 100 undecided voters. And they'll have a chance to do it all again next Wednesday night on the ABC. CROCHET KID Now it's time to meet Evie from regional New South Wales, who's an award winning crocheter! Yep, 14-year-old Evie here is taking the crochet world by storm! She's from a town called Bomaderry in New South Wales, and has spent the past three years entering local shows and winning big state competitions like the Sydney Royal Easter Show! But her interest in needlework didn't come out of nowhere. Evie actually took up the hobby from her Grandma, who taught her and her Aunty how to crochet. For Evie, Crocheting is about much more than just winning ribbons! 17 YEAR OLD RUNNER First up, to the moment 17-year-old Leah O'Brien broke a long standing record in the 100 metre race at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships. With a time of 11.14 seconds, she toppled the previous record which has stood for 57 years. DISCUS RECORD Now to a new record in discus, by Matthew Denny at the Oklahoma throws series in the US. His throw will also go down in the history books as the 5th longest throw ever recorded anywhere in the world. BOMB RAT And finally, it's not just humans out here breaking records. We've also got Ronin the bomb-sniffing rat! Ronin is a giant African pouched rat working in Cambodia as part of a program that's trying to remove all landmines still left over from decades of war in the country. __________________________________________ Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/behindthenews...
