Copyright (c) 1986 Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) Ríkisútvarpið, or RÚV, is Iceland's public service broadcaster. Operating from its studios in the country's capital, Reykjavík, as well as regional centres around Iceland, it broadcasts an assortment of general programming to a wide national audience via three radio stations: Rás 1 and Rás 2, also available internationally; Rondó (only available via the Internet and digital radio); and one full-time television station of the same name. RÚV had began TV transmissions on 30 September 1966, with Sjónvarpið (now known as RÚV1), and at the time, broadcast operations only took place on Wednesdays and Fridays, only gradually expanding to the rest of the week through the years, but however, there were no transmissions on Thursdays (until in 1987, which leads to the first full week of television in Iceland). In addition, no TV transmissions were broadcasted during the month of July up until in 1983. Since its 1966 inception, RÚV has become among one of the most successful public service broadcasters in Europe. With its radio, TV and online offering, the broadcaster continues to reach over 95% of the country every week.
