May Day, 2017. MAGA and Antifa clash in the streets of downtown Austin while Chase Bank watches from above. Three years later, a pandemic empties those same streets. SXSW is canceled. The bars are boarded up. And a one-eyed traveling musician named Franklin Preston — stranded on the sidewalk for thirty days with nothing but his guitar — offers the only civil discourse anyone's had in years. — Filmed during the first COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, with protest footage from May Day 2017 at Republic Square in downtown Austin. Franklin Preston came to Austin to busk during SXSW. The festival was canceled before he arrived. He spent thirty days on the streets. In December 2025, Franklin completed a recovery program in Tennessee. He still plays guitar.
