Chicken Hatching Timeline (First Batch) Total incubation period: about 21 days (sometimes 20–22 days — this is normal) 🥚 Day 1 – Incubation Starts The hen begins sitting tightly on the eggs. Heat (≈37.5°C / 99.5°F) activates embryo growth. Nothing visible inside yet. 🌱 Day 2–4 – Early Development Blood vessels begin forming. A tiny embryo starts beating heart around day 3. If candled: faint red spider-like veins appear. 🕸️ Day 5–7 Embryo becomes clearly visible. Eyes start forming. Candling shows a dark spot with strong veins. 🐣 Day 8–14 – Growing Stage Chick develops beak, wings, and legs. Movement can be seen during candling. Egg becomes darker as chick fills more space. 📦 Day 15–17 – Nearly Formed Chick Chick now looks like a real baby chicken. Air cell at the blunt end becomes larger. Chick positions its head toward the air cell (very important stage). 🔊 Day 18 – Lockdown Period The hen sits very tight — do NOT disturb eggs. Chick absorbs the yolk into its body (its first food). Inside the egg the chick prepares to breathe air. 🐥 Day 19 – Internal Pip Chick breaks the inner membrane into the air cell. It starts breathing air inside the egg. Sometimes you can hear faint ticking or chirping sounds. 🐥 Day 20 – External Pip Chick pecks a small hole in the shell (called pipping). You will see a tiny crack or hole. Do NOT help the chick — helping usually kills it because blood vessels are still attached. 🐣 Day 21 – Hatching Day Chick slowly rotates and cuts the shell in a circle (zipping). Shell splits open. Wet chick comes out and rests. It dries and becomes fluffy after 4–8 hours. Important Tips First chick may hatch on day 20, last chick day 22 → normal. Never wash eggs. Never open eggs early. Keep predators and people away from the hen. The chick can live 24–48 hours without food (it lives on absorbed yolk).
