Bangkok bomb blast: Deadly blast at tourist shrine kills 19 - TomoNews

BANGKOK, THAILAND — Mass casualties may have been the goal of the deadly blast at a religious shrine in Thailand's capital on Monday evening, Thai officials said, following a bomb attack that killed 19 people and left more than a hundred others injured. The explosion happened near the Erawan shrine in Bangkok's central district, a popular shrine close to three major shopping malls and several tourist hotels. The explosive device was placed inside the Erawan shrine and detonated at around 6.55 p.m., The Bangkok Post reported. The timing of the detonation was crucial as many people go to the shrine in the evening on their way home from work and tourists gather to watch traditional Thai dancing, according to CNN. 19 people were killed and 123 others injured, based on the figures released by the Royal Thai Police Office as of 11.20pm on Monday. "But it was clear that the perpetrators intended to destroy the economy and tourism, because it occurred in the heart of (Bangkok's) business district," Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said in the press conference. A possible female suspect was seen 15 minutes before the blast carrying and placing a travel bag inside the shrine, an unnamed police officer on the scene said to The New York Times. According to police, the explosive was composed of three kilogrammes of TNT stuffed inside a pipe and wrapped with white cloth. Two other suspected bombs were found to be harmless by military explosive ordnance-disposal technicians. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration announced that all 438 city schools will be closed Tuesday for safety reasons.
