In episode 61 of the Schuman Talks, host Jeff Fountain speaks with Dr. Yuriy Pidlisnyy and Dr. Anatolii Babynskyi of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv about the enduring relevance of the social and political thought of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky (1865–1944) — one of the most influential moral and spiritual leaders in modern Ukrainian history. The discussion explores the life and legacy of Andrei Sheptytsky, who lived and led under four successive regimes — Austro-Hungarian, Polish, Nazi, and Soviet — while remaining deeply committed to Christian faith, human dignity, and moral responsibility. A contemporary of Robert Schuman, Sheptytsky shared a vision of society rooted in Christian values and applied it courageously under radically different and often oppressive political systems. ***** Dr. Anatolii Babynskyi is a researcher at the Ukrainian Catholic University's (UCU) Institute for Church History. He is the author of "The Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church: A Short History," published in English, which covers the history of the church from the beginnings of Christianity in Ukraine to the present. Dr. Yuriy Pidlisnyy is a prominent Ukrainian philosopher, political scientist, and academic currently serving as the Chair of the Political Science Department at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). He is also the Head of the Department for Laity and Family of the Major Archbishopric of the UGCC.
