Album release concert of Gert-Jan Dreessen’s Angle of Incidence Gert-Jan Dreessen presents his debut album Angle of Incidence, recorded live on 21 October 2025 in the Concertzaal of De Bijloke (Ghent, Belgium). Angle of Incidence is an exploration of perception, interaction and reflection in sound — a musical investigation into how angles of approach shape meaning. Drawing from acoustic jazz sensibilities, subtle textures and spacious harmonic narratives, the album asks: How does our angle of listening change what we hear? The title references the geometrical notion that the path of sound — like light — is shaped by the surface it encounters, a metaphor Dreessen uses throughout the compositions to reflect on the interplay between structure and spontaneity. At the same time, Angle of Incidence reflects Dreessen’s first decade as a professional musician. The title also points to the many encounters, collaborations and artistic environments that have shaped his voice over the years. Each meeting leaves a trace — subtly altering direction, refining perspective and influencing the way rhythm, space and form are approached. The album gathers those accumulated experiences into a coherent body of work, marking a moment of consolidation and artistic clarity. In its review, Jazz Magazine praised the album’s “profondeur de sentiment” and “grande finesse,” highlighting Dreessen’s ability to avoid the trap of the demonstrative “drummer’s album” and commending the quartet’s balance, sensitivity and compositional originality.
