(7 Feb 2018) UNMASKING THE BAFTA TROPHY PROCESS With the British Academy Film Awards just around the corner, preparations are underway for the U.K.'s biggest movie awards ceremony. Of course, an essential element of the BAFTAs is the award itself - the prestigious mask trophy. A team is currently busy casting the coveted bronze sculptures in West Drayton, on the outskirts of London. Working to a design created by U.S. sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe in 1955, New Pro Foundries will create more than 250 BAFTA masks for this year's ceremony, in batches of 10. The finished trophies will be awarded across a number of different categories, from acting to directing, from costume to makeup and hair. It's a design that "is directly taken from the original sculpture by Mitzi Cunliffe," explains the foundries managing director, Patrick Helly. The metal "was specifically selected by Miss Cunliffe for the color that it is when it's polished." "It's a phosphor bronze. PB3," he continues. "We did a whole series of trials at the beginning of different types of alloys and she settled on that one as being the color that she wanted." The casting process takes around three hours and each finished BAFTA mask weighs approximately 2.8kg. The British Academy Film awards will be take place at London's Royal Albert Hall on February 18. The British ceremony is often seen as an indicator of likely success at Hollywood's Academy Awards, which will take place on March 4.
