Tristan da Cunha has the unspoken status of "the most useless inhabited island in the world" among geographers. Formally, Tristan da Cunha is part of the British Overseas Empire, but, in fact, it has long been an independent microstate. And it has its own constitution. The island was located in the Atlantic Ocean, its area is 98 square kilometers. But most of the island is occupied by a volcano. This is one of the most remote inhabited places on Earth - located far from the continents, right in the middle of the ocean. It is located 2816 km from the coast of South Africa and 3360 km from South America. The population of the island is 260 people. The average natural population decline is minus 3 people per year. Although in 2015 the island celebrated a joyful parity - 4 people were born and 4 died. Gone to zero! It is curious that almost all local residents are descendants of 8 men (six Europeans and two Americans) and 7 women (five Africans and two Irish). Occasionally, the gene pool of the inhabitants of Tristan da Cunha is replenished with settlers from Great Britain. The entire industry of the island is represented by a single crab processing factory. In fact, it's just a big white industrial warehouse next to the port. Agriculture - one potato plantation. So in vain we associate Belarusians with potatoes. The palm in love for potatoes should go to the Tristanians, because potatoes make up the majority of their diet. Sometimes cereals are also grown. However, the soil here is still fertile. All these "extensive" benefits are monitored by the local government. The Island Council consists of 11 members. Three are appointed by British curators, the rest are chosen by locals. The chief member of the council who is voted for by the majority is appointed by the Chief Islander. So if you are suddenly indignant that we, they say, feed our deputies and there are so many of them - remember the island of Tristan. Here the government is 5% of the population. And that's not counting ordinary officials! Theoretically, there could be tourists here. But, alas, Tristan da Cunha does not particularly favor tourists. Of the attractions here - only a hut with a thatched roof, which is considered a museum. But there is nothing to show here. Visitors are not allowed to stay overnight here. Moreover, it takes several days to sail here on a ship, but planes do not fly here. At the same time, large ships do not even go here - only small fishing and scientific vessels. The port is simply not equipped to receive large ships. However, some travelers claim that the inhabitants of Tristan are hospitable. And they even managed to rent an apartment here for 10 pounds sterling a day (about 700 rubles at the current exchange rate). Internet here is available only four hours a day and is very expensive. The speed is only enough to send e-mail. Two hours a day, residents are entertained by a local radio station. From the unique - such beauties live here: Crested penguins do not like Antarctica, but prefer the islands and the mainland of South America. Tristan didn't have any events in history. Tristan never wanted anything. Tristan did not propose or design anything for this world. Tristan doesn't even want to talk to anyone. They just want to be left alone.
